Felt & Coffee Filter Face Mask

With felt, a coffee filter and a few other materials, you can create a DIY face mask. Find easy step-by-step instructions below for how to make a homemade face mask with a filter.

Shop tools & materials you’ll need:

Tools & materials you’ll need:

  • Piece of felt
  • Scissors
  • 1.8 m of grosgrain ribbon

Also, make sure you’ve got a hot glue gun & glue sticks (or sewing machine, if preferred), coffee filter and the mask pattern. (You can download this pattern here.)

Here’s how to make it:

Step 1 Image

Step 1

Download and print the mask pattern. Fold the piece of felt in half. Lay the pattern on the folded felt and cut the pieces out.

Step 2 Image

Step 2

Working with the larger pieces first, place a line of hot glue along the curved area and attach it to the matching side. Make sure your glue line is not too small and is continuous, as you want the mask completely sealed.

TIP: If you have a sewing machine, you can also sew in each step instead of using hot glue.

Step 3

To make the coffee filter insert, fold the filter in half and lay it on top of the mask. Then, fold the sides of the filter so they line up with the felt’s edges. Use hot glue to hold the filter’s shape. Trim off the excess pieces, then place the filter into the mask.

TIP: This piece will need to be replaced each time it is worn. Make several so they are ready to use when needed.

Step 4

Cut four pieces of grosgrain ribbon that are 43.1 cm long (or the length needed to fit around your head).

Step 5 Image

Step 5

Glue 1.2 cm of the ribbon ends to the four corners of the mask.

Step 6

Use hot glue to attach the remaining two pieces of felt over the ends with the ribbon as an extra reinforcement.

Step 7

Put the mask on and tie the ribbons to secure it to your face.

TIP: To keep it in place, make sure the top ribbons lay on and over the tops of your ears.
